Oracle Instant Portal makes it easy for you to create communities of users who can share content in a secure environment. Whether you want to enable content sharing throughout your company, create smaller portals to serve the needs of a particular department, or find a way to communicate more fully with your partners or customers, Oracle Instant Portal's simple interface and easy editing controls means you'll spend less time building your portal and more time helping your users get their jobs done more efficiently.
To help get you started, Oracle Instant Portal comes with a set of pre configured pages, organized along the lines of common lines of business (Marketing, Human Resources, and so on). You can use these pages as they are, or customize them to more closely reflect your actual enterprise. You can also easily add your company logo and name to customize the portal for your users.
Before you get started, it's important to understand a few key concepts. For example, each portal consists of one or more pages. Here is an example of an Oracle Instant Portal page.

There are two types of pages in Oracle Instant Portal: top-level and child pages. Top-level pages represent large areas or major themes within your portal, and are represented as tabs along the top of the page. In this example, Home, Company, Marketing, and so on are all examples of top-level pages. If you owned a travel agency, you might have top-level pages called Hotels, Cruises, and Restaurants, to name a few.
Each top-level page (except the home page) can have one or more child pages, which represent sub-groups of information related to the top-level page. For example, within the Sales page, it makes sense to have child pages devoted to such areas as Sales Reports, Presentations, and so on. Child pages are always listed in the top-level page's navigation area, which appears on the far left of the page. When you click a child page in the navigation area, the content of the child page is displayed in the content area, which is outlined above in red.
In Oracle Instant Portal, your content is added in the form of one or more items. Here are the types of items you can add:
| If you have this kind of content... | Add this kind of item: |
|---|---|
Shorter text, which may or may not include lists, tables, images, or hyperlinks. The title, the summary, and the text itself is displayed right on the page itself. In the sample page, "Latest Sales Figures Available" is a Rich Text item. |

| Longer text, which may or may not include lists, tables, images, or hyperlinks. The title and summary are displayed on the page, but the user must click an icon to display the text itself. | Expandable Rich Text |
A file. When you add a file item, a hyperlink to the file is added to the page. In the sample page, "Welcome to the Sales Department!" is a File item. When the user clicks the icon, a file opens in another browser. |

| Pictures or images. The image is displayed within the body of the page. | Image |
| An email address that you want users to know about. | |
| A URL. A hyperlink to the web site you specify is added to the page. | URL |
It's very simple to add, change, or delete pages and items in Oracle Instant Portal. To do these things, you have to be in edit mode, which you enter by clicking the Edit Mode icon at the top of the page:
![]()
Only the users who have the privileges to contribute content to the page will see the Edit Mode icon. When you're ready to see the page as your users will see it (that is, in view mode), just click the icon again. All editing is done in-place--all you have to do is toggle between edit mode and view mode.
