Use this page to create a new category for classifying the content of the page group.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Parent Category | Displays the name of the category under which you are creating the new category, or <None> if the category is at the top level in the page group. |
| Name | Enter a name for the category. The name can be used in a URL to directly access the category. Direct access URLs take the following format:
For example:
Note: The name must be unique within the page group and the Shared Objects page group. The name is limited to 60 characters and can contain only alphanumeric characters (A-Z a-z 0-9) and the underscore character; spaces and other special characters are not allowed. |
| Display Name |
Enter a descriptive display name for the category. Note: The display name can contain up to 240 characters. |
When you click Create, a link is displayed at the top of the page from which you can edit the category. You can also create additional categories, or click Close to return to the Navigator.
When users create pages and items, they can associate them with one and only one category. Other users can then choose to view all of the pages and items associated with a particular category.
When you create a category, a page is also created. This page includes an autoquery custom search portlet that lists all the items and pages that belong to the category. If the items in a region are grouped by category, the name of the category is displayed as a link in the group by banner. When users click this link, that category's page is displayed, listing all the items and pages that belong to the category.
The first time you create a category in a page group, a page template is also created and all category pages in the page group are based on this page template. This means that if you want to change the way category pages look, you just need to edit the category page template (rather than each individual category page). Although you can base any page on this template, we recommend that you use it only for pages used to list category contents.
