Create Item Type

Use this page to create a custom item type. Custom item types help you extend the functionality of the base content item types provided in the portal.

After you create an item type, you must make the item type available to users of the page group. Users will not see the item type, and will not be able to add an item of that type, until the item type is added to the list of visible item types.

Item Type Properties

Field	Description
Name	Enter a name for the custom item type. The name is used internally only. Note: The name must be unique within the page group and the Shared Objects page group, is limited to 30 characters, and can contain only alphanumeric characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9) and the underscore character (_); no spaces or other special characters.
Display Name	Enter a descriptive name for the custom item type. The display name is used in the Navigator and in the add item wizard item type list, so shorter display names are better. Note: The display name is limited to 60 characters, and can contain any character, including spaces.
Base Item Type	Choose the base item type from which to inherit attributes. This provides a starting point from which to extend your custom item type.

Notes

When you click Create, a link is displayed at the top of the page from which you can edit the custom item type. You can also create additional custom item types, or click Close.
You can create custom item types within the Shared Objects page group to make them available in multiple page groups.

Locating this Page

Click the Navigator link, then click the Page Groups tab.
At the top level, click the link for the page group in which you want to create the item type.
Click the Item Types link.
Next to Create New, click the Item Type link.

Tips:

A Navigator link can appear on any page. By default, you can find this link on the Portal Builder page.
Click Page Groups in the Path links to get to the top level of the Page Groups Navigator.
