Go to topField Descriptions

Region Type

Field Description
Type

Indicates that the region contains items. If the region is empty, this is a radio group, and you can change the region type to Portlets, Sub-Page Links, or Undefined.

Note: When you add a region, the type of the region is undefined (i.e., it has the potential to contain portlets, items, or sub-page links), regardless of the type of the region where you clicked the add region icon (the source region). When you change the region to a portlet, item, or sub-page links region, the new region will use the same property settings as the source region. If you change the new region to be the same region type as the source region, the new region will also use the same attribute list as the source region. Otherwise, the new region uses the default attribute list for that region type.

Region Content

Field Description
Enable Users To Include Content In This Region

If you are editing a region in a page:

Clear this check box if you do not want users to be able to add, hide, show, move, or delete items in this region when they are customizing the page. Users can still add, hide, show, move, and delete the portlets in this region when editing the page.

If you are editing a region in a page template:

Clear this check box if you do not want users to be able to add, hide, show, move, or delete items in this region when they are editing or customizing a page that is based on this template.

Region Display Options

Field Description
Display Name

Enter a display name for the region. Enter a meaningful name that describes the kind of items that are displayed in the region. This name displays only if you have chosen to display region banners.

Region display names can also be useful when you must map the content of one page to another (e.g., when you are switching from one template to another). The name is used to identify a region in lieu of an automatically assigned number.

Note: The display name can contain up to 1000 characters.

Display Region Banner

Select to display a banner containing the region name at the top of the region.

Note: The region banner is displayed only if you select this check box and give the region a display name.

Width

Enter the width of the region in pixels, or as a percentage of the overall width of the page.

Notes:

  • You must include a percent sign (%) if you want the number you enter to be interpreted as a percentage, rather than a number of pixels.
  • If you choose to have some regions expressed in pixels and others on the same page expressed in percentages, the page may look slightly different in different browsers.
  • Even if you enter 1% in an attempt to make the region as small as possible, the region will expand to display the full content of the region.
Height

Enter the height of the region in pixels.

Note: Even if you enter 1 in an attempt to make the region as small as possible, the region will expand to display the full content of the region.

Number Of Columns

Enter the number columns to display in the region.

Example: The following example shows how the items are displayed in a region with 4 columns:

Four-column item region

Here is the same region with the number of columns set to 2:

Two-column item region

Note: Number of Columns and Number of Rows work together to limit the number of items that display in an item region. See Number of Rows for more information.

Number of Rows

Enter the number of rows to display in the region. The number of rows and columns work together to define how much content is displayed in the region. For example, if you have six items, and you define two columns for the items, you will get two columns of three items each. If you define two columns and two rows, you will get two columns with two items each. The last two items will not display unless you respecify the number of rows to three or more.

Example: The following example shows how items are displayed with two columns.

Six items in a two column region

Here is the same region with two columns and two rows.

6 items, 2 columns, 2 rows (only 4 items display)

All six items will display when you reset the item region's number of columns or rows to three or greater.

Item Display Options

Field Description
Space Between Items Enter the amount of space (in pixels) to appear between the items in this region.
Space Around Items

Enter the amount of space (in pixels) to appear between the items in this region and edge of the region.

The following illustration shows one region with Space Between Items set to 4, and Space Around Items set to 5. The other region has Space Around Items set to 6; since there is only one item in this region, Space Between Items is not applicable.

Space between and around items

Notice that the total distance between the right-most item in Region 1 and the item in Region 2 is 11 pixels: the total of both regions' Space Around Items settings.

Note: Creating regions and not populating them is another way to add considerable empty space to your page. You can control how much space is displayed with the Space Around Items field.

Group By

Choose:

  • None to not group items. This is the default.
  • Category to group items by their category.
  • Author to group items by their author. Author groups are ordered alphabetically by user name.
  • Date to group items by their creation date. Date groups are ordered from oldest to most recent.
  • Item Type to group items by their item type. For example, File, Text, Image, etc.
Display Group By Banner Select to display a banner above each group of items in the region.
Sort By

Choose:

  • Default to not order items. If you choose this option, items are ordered according to how you explicitly arrange them in the region.
  • Title to order items alphabetically by their display name.
  • Size to order items by their size.

Notes:

  • If you sort the region by Title or Size, users will not be able to manually arrange items in the region (the Arrange icon will not be displayed in the region toolbar).
  • If you have chosen to group the items in the region, the Sort By option determines the order in which items are displayed within each group.
Sort Order

Choose:

  • Ascending to order items from A to Z (Title), or smallest to largest (Size).
  • Descending to order items from Z to A (Title), or largest to smallest (Size).
Item Icon Height

Enter the height (in pixels) that you want all item images in this region to be.

Note: If you leave this field empty, the height defaults to the actual height of the image.

Item Icon Width

Enter the width (in pixels) that you want all item images in this region to be.

Note: If you leave this field empty, the width defaults to the actual width of the image.

Item Alignment Choose how you want the items in this region to be aligned: on the Left, Center, or Right of the region.
