Region Type

Field Description
Region Type

Indicates that the region contains portlets. If the region is empty, this is a radio group, and you can change the region type to Items, Sub-Page Links, or Undefined.

Note: When you add a region, the type of the region is undefined (i.e., it has the potential to contain portlets, items, or sub-page links), regardless of the type of the region where you clicked the add region icon (the source region). When you change the region to a portlet, item, or sub-page links region, the new region will use the same property settings as the source region. If you change the new region to be the same region type as the source region, the new region will also use the same attribute list as the source region. Otherwise, the new region uses the default attribute list for that region type.

Region Content

Field Description
Enable Users To Include Content In This Region

If you are editing a region in a page:

Clear this check box if you do not want users to be able to add, hide, show, move, or delete portlets in this region when they are customizing the page. Users can still add, hide, show, move, and delete the portlets in this region when editing the page.

Note: If you clear this check box, users will also not be able to move portlets into this region when customizing the page.

If you are editing a region in a page template:

Clear this check box if you do not want users to be able to add, hide, show, move, or delete portlets in this region when they are editing or customizing a page based on the template.

Region Display Options

Field Description
Display Name

Enter a display name for the region. Enter a meaningful name that describes the kind of portlets that are displayed in the region. This name only displays if you have chosen to display region banners.

Region display names can also be useful when you must map the content of one page to another (e.g., when you are switching from one template to another). The name is used to identify a region in lieu of an automatically assigned number.

Note: The display name can contain up to 1000 characters.

Display Region Banner Select to display a banner containing the region name at the top of the region.
Width

Enter the width of the region in pixels, or as a percentage of the overall width of the page.

Notes:

  • You must include a percent sign (%) if you want the number you enter to be interpreted as a percentage, rather than a number of pixels.
  • If you choose to have some regions expressed in pixels and others on the same page expressed in percentages, the page may look slightly different in different browsers.
  • Even if you enter 1% in an attempt to make the region as small as possible, the region will expand to display the full contents of the region.
Height

Enter the height of the region in pixels.

Note: Even if you enter 1 in an attempt to make the region as small as possible, the region will expand to display the full contents of the region.

Number Of Columns

Enter the number columns to display in the region.

Number of Columns and Number of Rows can work together to restrict the number of portlets that display in a region. See Number of Rows for more information.

Number of Rows

Enter the number of rows to display in the region.

Number of Columns and Number of Rows can work together to restrict the number of portlets that display in a region. For example, if you have six portlets in a two-column region, you get two columns of three portlets each. If you have two columns and two rows, you get two columns of two portlets each. The other two portlets will not display unless you increase the number of columns or the number of rows to three or greater.

Portlet Display Options

Field Description
Space Between Portlets Enter the amount of space (in pixels) to appear between the edges of adjacent portlets in this region.
Space Around Portlets

Enter the amount of space (in pixels) to appear between the edge of each portlet in this region and the edge of the region itself.

The following illustration shows one region with Space Between Portlets set to 4, and Space Around Portlets set to 5. The other region has Space Around Portlets set to 6; since there is only one portlet in this region, Space Between Portlets is not applicable.

Spaces between and around portlets

Notice that the total distance between the right-most portlet in Region 1 and the portlet in Region 2 is 11 pixels: the total of both regions' Space Around Portlets settings.

Note: Creating regions and not populating them is another way to add considerable empty space to your page. You can control how much space is displayed with the Space Around Portlets field.

Show Portlet Headers

Select to display portlets headers for the portlets in this region. The portlet header contains the name of the portlet and any customize or edit defaults links.

Note: Because portlet headers contain the customize link, if you hide them, users will not be able to customize the portlets in the region. Users will still be able to edit the portlet defaults by editing the page.

Show Portlet Borders Select to display a box around each portlet in this region.
show links on portlet headers

Select which links to display in the header of each portlet in this region, including:

  • Customize, which enables users to customize the way the portlet appears.
  • Help, which provides access to help text for the portlet.
  • About, which provides access to a description of the portlet.
  • Details, which provides access to a more detailed view of the portlet by clicking the portlet title.
  • Remove, which enables users to remove the portlet from the page.
  • Collapse/Restore, which enables users to minimize and maximize the portlet on the page.

Notes:

  • If you have chosen not to display portlet headers (by clearing the Show Portlet Headers check box), these links will not be displayed even if you have selected the appropriate check box.
  • For information about how to specify help text and descriptions for your portlets, see the Portal Developer Kit on Oracle Technology Network.
